In the late 80s, twelve-year-old boys Tim Wheeler (b. January 4, 1977) and Mark Hamilton (b. March 21, 1977) still preferred to play football when they suddenly discovered the world of music. Having become hooked on the work of Iron Maiden, they shared guitar and bass among themselves and organized a tribute band, Vietnam. In the early 90s, when the grunge star rose, the group broke up, and Tim and Mark, influenced by the songs of Nirvana and local punks Lazer-Gun Nun, organized a new project, Ash.

The summer of 1992 turned out to be hot for the guys - they bounced around with concerts between Downpatrick and Belfast and at the same time managed to record about 50 compositions. Having cut several demos that had local success, the guys realized that they wouldn’t make it in their native outback, and tried to smuggle their films to London.

In 1994, their first single “Jack names the planets” was released, picked up by Radio One, after which Ash signed a contract with the Infectious Records label. That same year, the band did a couple of UK tours, shot to the top of the indie charts with the singles "Petrol" and "Uncle Pat" and released the EP "Trailer". In 1995, the boys finally graduated from school and now lessons did not interfere with their favorite activity. After a pair of hit singles, “Kung Fu” and “Girl from Mars,” they went on a world tour, leaving trashed hotel rooms and broken hearts in their wake.

In 1996, Ash went into studio for three months under the supervision of producer Owen Morris, resulting in their debut feature, 1977. The album, which came at the height of Britpop, burst to the top of the national charts, and photographs of the musicians graced the covers of magazines such as Smash Hits and NME. The band spent the next few months on intensive tours, in the middle of which guitarist Charlotte Hatherley joined the lineup.

Although the group continued to churn out hit singles, work on their second studio album was difficult. Wheeler experienced a creative crisis, and, in addition, the matter was complicated by problems with producers. One way or another, in the fall of 1998, “Nu-Clear Sounds” was released. The album, unlike its predecessor, turned out to be heavier and gloomier, which confused Ash fans. The musicians themselves were also at a loss and decided to take a break from their activities. Tim fled to New York, where he began filming some kind of bloody drug video, and the rest returned home to think about the future.

In 2000, the foursome got back together and went to sunny Spain to record their third opus. This time things were much more fun and the album turned out just right. Accompanied by the hits "Shining light" and "Burn baby burn", "Fallen all angels" rushed to the top of the charts, throwing Janet Jackson from there. A slightly less successful sequel, “Meltdown,” followed in 2004, and the following year the group participated in the work on the soundtrack for the game “Republic Commando.” The beginning of 2006 was marked by the departure of Charlotte, and Ash returned to the trio format.

What is “Esh”? That is, literally - what is this word? It's very simple - it means "fire" in Hebrew. Why from Hebrew - yes, because Igor Nadezhdin, pianist and organizer of the group, lived for a long time in Israel, where the idea was born to assemble a team playing Brazil Jazz. And such an opportunity arose only when several people from different cities and countries met in Moscow, and at the end of 2002 the group gave their first concert at the Oracle of the Divine Bottle club.

What kind of music does “Esh” play? This is not quite bossa nova in the classical sense of the word. Rather, it is a combination of jazz, samba and a little Latin funk. And, of course, the band plays bossa nova. The repertoire includes arrangements of songs by A. K. Jobim, many of them completely unknown in Russia, Brazilian classics, as well as songs of his own composition in Portuguese.

And now a little about the composition of the group. These are, of course, vocals, piano (or keyboards), bass, drums and percussion. From time to time, a saxophone also joins the ensemble.
