Victoria Amazonia is blooming in the “pharmaceutical garden.” Victoria Amazonia June blooms in the “pharmaceutical garden” – Open Air

On June 9, after 15.30, the third flower of the largest water lily in the world will bloom in the Botanical Garden of Moscow State University “Apothecary Garden” - visitors will be able to see the Amazonian Victoria (Victoria amazonica) with a pink flower that changed gender overnight, in the tropical pool in the Victoria Greenhouse until late in the evening. For the first time, this flower bloomed on the night of June 9 at 3.15 in literally 5 minutes - white and fragrant with pineapple. The fourth bud is also on the way. There are only 2 specimens of Victoria in this reservoir, and flowering intermittently can be observed throughout the summer.

In honor of such a unique and long-awaited event as the first flowering of Victoria in modern history“Apothecary Garden”, the director of the garden, Alexey Reteum, urgently ordered to hold a festive gala concert “Duel of Opera and Musical” in the open air on June 10 with the participation of stars of the Russian opera stage and the best domestic performers in the musical genre. Tickets for the concert must be booked at http://www.hortus.ru/events.

Curator of tropical plants at the “Apothecary Garden” Vitaly Alyonkin:

- It all happened at night, friends! And only today you will see this miracle in the “Apothecary Garden” - the first flowering of the largest water lily in the world in the 21st century! This is already the third flower in a week: last night I sat in the Victorian greenhouse with piranhas until the first roosters - waiting for the bud to open for the first time. And he waited! It all started at 3.15 - in exactly 5 minutes the white flower with a charming sweet aroma completely opened! In the middle of the milky petals - in the center - scarlet stamens were visible, but I did not touch the most delicate creature with my fingers. While I was taking pictures and smelling the flower, I almost fell into the slush and barely got out of the pool.

He did not wait for the end of the first flowering and went home to the kingdom of Morpheus. Today, June 9, this flower will turn PINK and open after 15.00 - HURRY TO THE GARDEN! In the evening it will close forever and go under water.

Giant Victoria is an extremely spectacular crop with leaves up to two meters in diameter, capable of supporting the weight of a child. The flower of a plant lives for about 48 hours, during which time it changes not only color, but also gender. On the first evening, the large white female flower attracts pollinating insects with a strong pineapple scent and then locks them inside for a day. On the second night, the flower - now purple, male and odorless - again opens fully to release the insect with pollen, which goes in search of the white flower on another Victoria specimen. Then the bud closes forever.

According to the experience of other botanical gardens, Victoria blooms throughout the summer - a flower appears with each new leaf. There are currently 2 specimens in the pool - we have made sure to have flowering specimens with flowers in different phases (male and female) for possible pollination and seed production.

In total, the collection of the “Apothecary Garden” now contains 5 specimens of Amazonian Victoria.

For the first time in Moscow, Victoria was grown and bloomed 108 years ago, in 1908, precisely in the Botanical Garden of Moscow University. Since then, the Moscow Botanical Garden grew Victoria every year with no less success until 1915, when its cultivation ceased due to lack of fuel caused by the harsh conditions of the war. After almost a ten-year break, Victoria culture was resumed in 1924, and then it continued until the end of the 1960s, when, due to labor intensity and a gradual reduction in funding for the garden, it was stopped again.

Photos of the Victorias of the Botanical Garden of Moscow University went around the world and were included in the most authoritative domestic and foreign botanical publications.

The modernization of the Victory Orangery was carried out with the assistance of Innopraktika.

June 10 from 11.00 to 15.00 - Children's holiday“Kalyaka-Malyaka”. All the little guests of the garden will receive gifts, competitions, animators, free master classes on making pictures from sand and glitter, modeling animal figures from modeling clay, creating three-dimensional cards from holographic foil, crepe paper and neon plasticine. Face painting artists will decorate children's faces with images of fantastic flowers and animals. The culmination of the holiday is a musical flash mob with the participation of the Big Children's Choir named after. Popova “Let there always be sunshine.”

At 20.00 - “Duel of Opera and Musical” - a grand open-air gala concert in honor of the first flowering of the largest water lily in the world!
