Teodor Currentzis today is one of the most extraordinary and interesting musicians with an impressive track record. He was born in Athens, where he received higher education and founded a chamber orchestra. At the age of 22, Currentzis began studying at the St. Petersburg State Conservatory with music teacher, founder of the Leningrad conducting school Ilya Musin, whose students are the artistic director Mariinsky Theater Valery Gergiev, former chief conductor of the Bolshoi Theater Vasily Sinaisky, chief conductor symphony orchestra St. Petersburg State Philharmonic Yuri Temirkanov.

Ten years later, Currentzis founded two groups: the musicalAeterna orchestra and the choir of the same name, and in 2014 he received Russian citizenship. Today Teodor Currentzis holds the position of artistic director and director of Perm academic theater Opera and Ballet named after. P.I. Tchaikovsky, on the basis of which his musical projects musicAeterna work. In 2016, Currentzis became “Conductor of the Year” according to the German opera monthly Opernwelt, based on the opinions of 50 music critics.

It is somewhat surprising why a conductor with such experience and track record decided to head a theater in a small Ural city. Currentzis himself answers this question in a November interview with the Snob project: “Any living business requires fresh blood. There is no art without this. Together with my orchestra and choir, we have come a long way. You can evaluate it in different ways. But no one would dare to say that we followed the beaten path, lined with carpets and roses. And in the fact that he led us to Salzburg, to this citadel of classical art, I see a certain pattern: it means that the direction was chosen correctly. But I can say with all conviction that this became possible only thanks to work in the provinces.”

On December 20, the premiere of a new version of the ballet “Cinderella” by Sergei Prokofiev, staged by the chief choreographer of the Perm Opera House Alexei Miroshnichenko, was presented in Perm. The plot of the ballet was transferred to the ballet stage of 1957, where, according to Currentzis himself, “Khrushchev, Furtseva, and the Bolshoi Theater of that time” were brought out. In the same interview with the “Snob” project, Currentzis calls Prokofiev’s “Cinderella” a kind of “dreary happiness”, and its new version - “a performance within a performance, in which the magic of the theatrical backstage should be present.”

It is curious in this story that Sergei Prokofiev finished work on the ballet after his trip to the city of Perm. The ballet premiered in post-war Moscow in 1945. Bolshoi Theater with Galina Ulanova in the title role. Charles Perrault's fairy tale formed the basis of the libretto, but the composer moved the action of the ballet to the era of Elizabeth's reign. Prokofiev included in the ballet the melodies of such dances as flamenco, gallop, minuet, gavotte and even pas de chal, which is a graceful performance of several dancers with a light scarf.

Currentzis himself called the new production sentimental and, as noted in Teatral magazine, “moderated the volcanic temperament of the music to reveal the musical concept.” Critics noted the softness, delicacy and even some intimacy of the new interpretation of Prokofiev’s “Cinderella”, which, in contrast with the sharp outbursts, made the production even more fragile and transparent.

The new “Cinderella” has already received positive reviews from a number of leading Russian publications. “All the ups and downs of love, creative passion and the collapse of hopes ended up in the hands of conductor Teodor Currentzis. He took full advantage of his chance, and “Cinderella,” conceived as a ballet about ballet, nevertheless turned out to be a ballet about the triumph of music,” writes the Vedomosti newspaper. And apparently, the concert on December 28 in the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory, in the absence of dance performance, will be a triumph of music in its purest manifestation.

Teodor Currentzis is one of the most extraordinary and charismatic conductors of our time. A student of the legendary Ilya Musin, after graduating from the St. Petersburg Conservatory, he rushed to the very heart of Russia - Novosibirsk, where, holding the post of chief conductor of the local opera and ballet theater, he created two unique groups - the musicAeterna orchestra and the musicAeterna choir. The maestro has collaborated with such renowned orchestras as the Vienna and Munich Philharmonic Orchestras, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra and the SWR Orchestra, as well as with the Zurich Opera, the Paris National Opera, the Royal Theater in Madrid and others.
The work brought the maestro the fame of being unusually thoughtful and at the same time fantastically emotional. music director. “In an art marked by the stamp of commerce, Teodor Currentzis plays with unique style, dedication and boldly takes artistic risks,” noted the founders of the prestigious KAIROS Prize, awarded to the musician in 2016. His outstanding work was also noted by European experts: this year Currentzis was named “Conductor of the Year” according to the 50 most authoritative music critics.
Since 2011, Theodor Currentzis has been directing the Perm Opera and Ballet Theater. P.I. Tchaikovsky and in a few years turned it into a world-famous venue. The maestro himself is a six-time winner of the National Theater Award. Golden Mask", and not only the entire Russian elite, but also connoisseurs come to the premieres of the theater and the Diaghilev Festival classical music from Europe.
The recordings made by Currentzis, published by Sony Classical, received the European Music Criticism Prize as the best operatic recording of the year (The Marriage of Figaro by W.A. Mozart), as well as two ECHO Klassik awards for the Best Recording of the Year: Opera of the 17th-18th centuries. (“The Marriage of Figaro” by W.A. Mozart) in 2014 and “Best recording of the year: symphonic music of the XX-XXI centuries.” (“The Rite of Spring” by Igor Stravinsky) in 2016.
This is not the first time that the maestro turns to Prokofiev’s ballet music: as the experience of concert performances of the ballet “Romeo and Juliet” has shown, the intensity and melody, drama and psychologism of the composer’s ballet works allow them to be perceived as large-scale symphonic canvases. “I wrote Cinderella in the tradition of the old classical ballet,” Prokofiev said, “it contains a pas de deux, an adagio, a gavotte, several waltzes, a pavane, a paspier, a bourrée, a mazurka, and a gallop. Each character has its own variation."
It is interesting that in historical sense Romeo and Juliet was followed by Cinderella. After the ballet about the tragic story of lovers from Verona was finally staged at the Mariinsky (then Kirov) Theater, Prokofiev, who was greatly impressed by Galina Ulanova-Julietta, decided to write a ballet especially for her. The plot was based on a well-known fairy tale about a girl oppressed by an evil stepmother, but with the help of a good fairy, she found a well-deserved happy fate.
Already before the summer of 1941, two acts were written. However, the beginning of the Great Patriotic War ruined all plans. Only in 1943 did the composer complete the clavier, after a trip to Perm (again a coincidence!), where the Kirov Theater was evacuated.
For Teodor Currentzis, Prokofiev's Cinderella is not new material: the maestro received the Special Jury Prize of the National Theater Award “Golden Mask” in 2007 for his conducting work in the performance of the Novosibirsk Opera and Ballet Theater, and literally a week before the concert in Moscow the premiere of the ballet will take place at the Perm Theater. P.I. Tchaikovsky, where Teodor Currentzis will perform both as a conductor and as a musical director.
