Grog, mulled wine and punch. What are the differences?

Grog, mulled wine and punch are drinks similar in their composition, preparation method, and warming effect.

What is the difference between punch and grog if they are brewed with high-quality strong rum?

And with mulled wine, at first glance, the drink has the same composition. Are they really that similar?

So, grog is a solution of rum and water, to which lemon juice is added for taste and nobility. While grog served as a remedy for scurvy and widespread drunkenness among English sailors, punch was always considered an aristocratic and noble drink and was not diluted with anything. And mulled wine is considered a warming drink.

To prepare punch you always take strong alcohol, and mulled wine is made from dry wine, which can be further diluted with water. If you replace strong alcohol with champagne, liqueur, wine, then you will make mulled wine, not punch.

No tea is added to these strong drinks; in classic punch it is the main ingredient.

Punch is a fairly strong drink, while mulled wine and grog generally do not exceed 8-15% alcohol.

In past centuries, punch as a drink was the prerogative of aristocrats, always served spectacularly, in the dark and set on fire.

Thus, the main difference and similarity between drinks is in their composition and methods of preparation.

How and from what do they drink?

If you want to figure out how to make an amazing cocktail, then feel free to invite your friends and family. This drink is not prepared in small quantities; seven to eight servings are just right. And served effectively.

  • We prepare large mugs. They should have thick, wide walls to retain heat for a long time.

Thick-walled glass glasses are also suitable, then it will be visible. Enjoying the punch shimmering in the light, it will become more interesting to try.

They savor the punch in small sips so that the aroma and taste of this aristocratic drink opens up and is felt.

Sweet desserts, gingerbread, and ice cream go well with punch. Fruits and berries and candies are suitable as snacks. A good hard cheese would be appropriate

Attention, TODAY only!

Non-alcoholic punch will warm you up on cold, chilly days, give you positivity and reward you with a good mood. This is an excellent drink option for those who do not tolerate alcohol. Its base is considered to be hot brewed black tea, and you can choose the added juices or compotes according to your taste: orange, tangerine, currant, cherry, etc.

Since in winter you can buy mainly citrus fruits, cranberries, etc., the punch is created on their basis, but I had concentrated cherry compote on hand, so I used that and tangerines. You are free to experiment and mix various fruit and berry juices with fresh or frozen fruits and berries. Don't limit the flight of your imagination - you can pamper your family every day with a unique non-alcoholic punch with new flavors.

So, let's prepare the necessary ingredients for preparing non-alcoholic punch according to classic recipe and let's start cooking!

Boil water in a kettle in advance. Pour the tea leaves into a saucepan or stewpan and add granulated sugar there. Choose tea according to your taste: hibiscus, black long leaf, with bergamot, etc.

Pour boiling water into the container and leave to brew for 5-7 minutes, covering with a lid.

Scald the tangerines with boiling water to enhance their aroma and wash off the dust. Cut into circles and stick dried cloves into each of them - this way you won’t have to look for the spice in the drink when it releases its aroma. There is no need to leave dried cloves for a long time - they begin to taste bitter.

Open the lid and place tangerine slices, cinnamon sticks and star anise into the brewed tea. Press lightly so that the tangerines release their juice. Place on the stove and bring almost to a boil, but do not boil!

Pour cherry compote or juice, juice of other berries or fruits, add ground cinnamon and mix everything carefully, let it brew for about 2-3 minutes and pour into a jug. When pouring into cups or glasses, strain the classic non-alcoholic punch through a strainer.

Raise your hand, who is familiar with the classic version of this drink and knows how to prepare punch at home? Not too much. Well, let's conduct an educational program! Even if today it seems to you that this is not “your” cocktail at all, tomorrow may bring new discoveries for which you should be prepared, at least theoretically.

Let's start with the fact that punch is a collective word that usually refers to alcoholic cocktails containing fruit juice. Or rather, it all started with this – alcohol and juice. Then the juice began to be combined with other liquids or even replaced with them - and this was the same as punch. Over time, they invented a non-alcoholic version of cocktails - and still continued to call it punch. And then they started, how they started pouring in all sorts of versions, and all of them - well, you understand, right? — passed under a common code name.

In general, punch is such an ancient, confusing and muddy matter that it’s impossible to figure it out without a glass of cocktail. They say there are two main versions of the origin of the recipe. Supporters of the first claim that the drink was invented in India, they loved it in every possible way and did not popularize it in every possible way, they just lived with it, but then British soldiers found out about it. And then there was a revolution in the history of punch - it was taken to England, where the recipe began its further travels around the world. The journey was rich - along the way the punch acquired “comrades”, some components were replaced by others, the recipe was improved and changed. So punch became the drink we know today - many-sided, varied, for every taste and expectation.

The second version of the origin sends us to Jamaica - cheerful, hot and sultry, where there is a lot of sugar cane and rum. However, the subsequent story is still the same - after the birth of the drink, the British became acquainted with it and still took it to their island. Well, continue with the text.

One thing is clear: wherever punch was actually originally born, the event was not particularly significant. The story of his “growing up” becomes known only thanks to the restless Englishmen, who carefully collected something unusual and cool from around the world, took it home and then introduced it to their grateful, caring compatriots. This is how humanity in its broad sense learned that there is punch in the world, and it is wonderful!

Oh, why are you raising your left eyebrow in confusion? Do you think the odes of praise to punch sound in vain? Well, most likely, you just haven’t tried your ideal punch yet - the one that you personally think is the best. There are a lot of varieties of this cocktail; today it is prepared on the basis of a wide variety of alcoholic (and other) drinks and diluted with a variety of additives. The task is simple: find the combination that will inspire you to make more and more new acquaintances and meetings with punch.

Don't you think it's time to get down to business - the best and proven punch recipes? It’s time, no question, let’s just allow ourselves one last remark. It is believed that the word “punch” itself is of Indian origin and goes back to panch, which in Hindi means nothing more than “five”. The five ingredients are what the punch started with: rum, lemon juice, sugar, tea leaves and boiling water. It was these components that formed the basis of the first cocktails that we are talking about today, and we’ll start our tasting with them.

5 Rules for Great Punch

  1. Of course, there are practically no rules, but it is still considered that the optimal temperature for serving punch is 65 degrees. When cooking, you should strive for 75-80 degrees: while you pour it, while you pour it, you will get just what you need.
  2. Punch ingredients should be only and exclusively natural. Tea is loose leaf and in no case bagged. Juices are freshly squeezed. Punch does not tolerate any flavorings, dyes or other “goodies”. Rum is not the most expensive and “famous” (it is rich and wonderful in itself, you should not kill it with cocktail additives) and not the cheapest (there is a high chance of buying a banal fake). The golden mean in choosing alcohol for punch is your way.
  3. Try removing sugar from the recipe and replacing it with honey. Believe me, the taste of the punch will only benefit from this!
  4. Punch is quite favorable towards spices, however, they should be added very, very carefully and with restraint. Unlike, for example, mulled wine, which, based on wine, can “accept” a wide variety of spices, punch will not “take” everything due to the fact that it contains strong alcohol with an already pronounced bright taste. Everything else should only emphasize the main melody without dictating its chords.
And by the way. When adding spices, give preference to their “whole” versions: a cinnamon stick, clove buds, star anise, a piece of nutmeg, and so on. Believe me, it is much easier to remove them from the pan than to strain the drink five times, getting rid of the cloudy sediment that ground spices give.
  5. Alcoholic drinks are poured into a hot base (juice or tea) and not vice versa. Perhaps this is precisely the main, basic and only rule that should be followed in order to prepare a delicious punch. In the reverse sequence (hot into rum or cognac), alcoholic drinks lose most of their aromatic component, which significantly impoverishes the taste of the push.

5 beautiful ideas on how to serve punch in an unusual way:

  1. Fruit looks amazing in a punch bowl, no matter what kind of punch you're making. Pieces of oranges, thin slices of lemon, whole strawberries, apple slices, a couple of carom stars, cranberries and sea buckthorn - this is not only fragrant, but also incredibly aesthetically pleasing!
  2. A sprig of mint or rosemary, a cinnamon stick, and anything else that can be put in a punch glass should be put in! You want your drink to look inimitable when held up to light? Then you have to try a little. Just a little bit!
  3. The sugar rim on the glasses is beautiful! Pour some water or red juice (pomegranate, grapefruit) into a saucer, turn the glass over, wetting its edges, and then place it in the next saucer, into which you first pour sugar. That's it - the small crystals will sparkle beautifully in the evening light!
  4. Not only a sugar rim looks beautiful on the rim of a glass, but also a piece of fruit - a pineapple ring or an orange slice, “planted” on a wine glass, will immediately set the guests up for celebration and fun.
  5. If you prepare punch on a regular basis, take care of purchasing special utensils: there are large, voluminous bowls with taps installed at the base. With their help it is convenient to pour the drink into glasses. Of course, there is no point in buying separate dishes for two or three servings, but for parties and big holidays this is a very convenient thing.
